Hanwokeuplikethis was a series where Hanna would wake up each morning, set her old iPhone on self-timer, and snap a quick selfie in the bathroom—because, let’s be honest, isn’t that the first place we all go when we wake up (to pee, of course)? Her bathroom had a quirky red light bulb that sparked the idea for her very first self-portrait, along with a bold new haircut—the shortest she’d ever had it cut. She continued this ritual for an entire year, keeping all the photos to herself, even though the Instagram account has since disappeared.
Now, Hanna plans to turn the photos into zines, featuring images from the series alongside some of her favorite quirky quotes, presented as little "back-of-the-toilet" mini books.
For anyone wondering where she’s been or where she is—she’s now a mom, with a baby in her lap every time she heads to the bathroom (yes, really, lol), but she’s still creating art and finding humor in the little moments of everyday life. Her new Instagram handle is @hannamania_, and she loves getting random messages from strangers who still share photos of other strangers' toilet selfies with captions like, 'Do y’all remember that girl who used to sit on the toilet every morning and take photos? This is for her.' It always makes her laugh! The connections Hanna made through this account really sparked her life as an artist in North Carolina and she is forever grateful.
